MSA is passionate about building character in youth, each camper who attends our life-changing programs has the unique opportunity to develop aspects of themselves they may never even have known about before!
Our hands-on field biology activities reinforce what students have been learning in class during the school year. Campers learn to keep a field journal, and to conduct actual field science during their camp program activities. This kind of one-on-one encounter with the natural world imparts a deep love and appreciation for the environment, through personal experience – something that cannot be replicated inside the classroom!
Program Overview
Activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, trawling for plankton and hiking the various trails of the island, give students the opportunity to take what they have learned in the brief lecture before hand and use the scientific method to conduct their own actual field research assignments. In this way, your students learn to see ‘thinking like a scientist’ as a way to enrich their experience of interacting with the natural world that surrounds them.
Your students quickly discover that field science as taught by MSA is an opportunity to allow their senses to blossom; as they use their own eyes, ears and other faculties as instruments in their scientific observations and investigations. MSA camp counselors encourage each student to write a conclusion after each session, as well as develop hypotheses about the patterns they have observed during their time in the field.
